PTBI's programs are focused on providing innovative ways to engage youth. Using the Theory of Change model and working with the communities we serve, our programs are designed to promote small changes and individual impact.
We provide service learning opportunities for local post-secondary students to further develop their skills in an international capacity. Our international programs are located in the developing Caribbean.
The program is delivered through a series of workshops and seminars with a anti-oppression and social justice framework using social media. The program culminates with a series local civic engagement projects which are plan and delivered by program participants.
This program is funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
Service learning programs provide students with an opportunity to volunteer within our development programs in the Caribbean. The program allows students to gain a deeper understanding of the host country and engage with the local community, while volunteering. All of our service learning programs are focused around a social justice theme.
LITERACY and LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS
PTBI's flagship annual camp program: Camp Power to Be is delivered in three streams which focus on the development of different aspects of child and youth development with a literacy and leadership focus.
- Employment Readiness (16 years and older): (ETP)
The Power to Be International (PTBI) in partnership with the University of Toronto's Enactus seeks to provide technology and resources to primary and high schools in rural Western parishes of Jamaica. Through a pilot project, selected rural school were provided with a Lumifi device, which uses a router as a hub PTBI's Digital Reading Emprovement Program (D-REP).
This program supports the communities in the Caribbean in fulfilling the goal of developing and promoting education. PTBI works with community partners to identify and complete various infrastructure projects which support education, children and youth.
Our infrastructure builds include local youth volunteer programs which allows community youth to participate in the development of their own community. Youth work with partners, trades people and volunteers to assist in completing the projects.
All of our programs are created within a sustainability model. We focus on capacity building and youth empowerment to provide the youth we serve with the ability to develop and build on lifelong skills. In turn, youth will use the skills developed or maintained through our programs and projects to assist in the development and maintaniece of their community and themselves for the future.
In addition to capacity building, we build communities through a continued presence. Many of our programs are run in the same communities year after year and have ongoing participation from a number of the same children. This provides youth in our programs with consistent support and opportunities for growth. Local youth who have been through our programs return as volunteers or staff for new programs.
We believe that these improvements will allow us to better measure the success of our international development initiative. Our overall goal is to provide a long-term solution to literacy and youth employment needs in this community.
